Helianthus 2022

In floristry, the sunflower is a current outsider and unpopular choice of flower as its upright stem and brute appearance is less favoured than more delicate and flowing stems. However, previously, the sunflower has been worshipped as a link to the sun god and mystified because of its heliotropic qualities. The Hopi culture gathered the seeds and used its dye extract to colour baskets and other daily items.

Cultivating a variety of sunflowers in an attempt to discover new colours, Narelle deviated from tradition and experimented within the dye garden. The attempt for new tones provided shades of browns however the most exciting was extracted from the Hopi sunflower seeds providing a greyish purple tone.
